This guide is based on official bank documentation. We have not personally tested the process with a Moroccan passport. If you are Moroccan and have opened Revolut, Wise or N26 in Spain, please share your experience at contact@ibrahingil.com — we'll add it to this guide and credit you. Your input helps thousands of other Moroccans arriving in Spain.
📋 In this guide
Moroccans are the largest foreign community in Spain — over 1.1 million people. Yet every year thousands of Moroccans arrive and face the same wall: traditional banks require NIE, and NIE appointments take weeks or months to get.
The solution exists and takes 15 minutes. Revolut and Wise both accept Moroccan passports in Spain without NIE. This guide explains exactly how to open each account and which one makes more sense for your situation.
Quick summary — which bank for you?
| Bank | NIE required? | IBAN type | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revolut | ✓ No NIE | Spanish (ES87) | Salary, bills, everyday use |
| Wise | ✓ No NIE | Belgian (BE97) | Sending money to Morocco |
| N26 | ✗ Requires NIE | Spanish (ES20) | After you get your NIE |
| BBVA / Santander / CaixaBank | ✗ Requires NIE | Spanish | Not recommended without NIE |
My recommendation for most Moroccans arriving in Spain: open Revolut first (Spanish IBAN, free, 15 minutes), and add Wise if you regularly send money back to Morocco — it offers the best EUR to MAD rates.
Why traditional Spanish banks won't work
BBVA, Santander, CaixaBank and most traditional banks require a NIE to open a resident account. They do offer non-resident accounts, but these require a "certificado de no residente" (a document you request at a police station), carry higher fees and have limited functionality.
In practice, the non-resident account path is slow, bureaucratic, and still results in a limited product. Neobanks are the practical alternative: 100% digital, regulated under European banking law, and open in minutes with just your Moroccan passport.
Revolut with a Moroccan passport — step by step
✓ Moroccan passports accepted. Revolut accepts Moroccan passports with no restrictions. You will need a Spanish address — temporary is fine (hotel, friend's address, future accommodation).
Revolut gives you a real Spanish IBAN (ES87) — identical in format to any traditional Spanish bank account. Your employer's payroll system will accept it, and you can set up direct debits for rent, utilities and any other Spanish bills.
What you need
- Valid Moroccan passport (not expired)
- A Spanish phone number or any European number
- A Spanish address (temporary is accepted)
- Email address
Step by step

Download Revolut from the App Store or Google Play. Use the referral link below to get a sign-up bonus.
Enter your phone number, create a PIN and add your email. Select Spain as your country of residence.
Enter your personal details
Enter your full name exactly as it appears on your Moroccan passport, date of birth, nationality (Morocco) and a Spanish address. Hotel, friend's address or future accommodation all work.
Verify your identity
Select Passport as your document type. Take a clear photo of your Moroccan passport data page and a selfie. Make sure the photo is well-lit and all text is readable. No NIE asked at any point.

Wise with a Moroccan passport — step by step
✓ Moroccan passports accepted. Wise accepts Moroccan passports with no restrictions. Wise supports transfers to Morocco (MAD), making it especially useful for Moroccan migrants.
Wise is particularly valuable for Moroccans in Spain because it supports direct transfers to Moroccan bank accounts in MAD at mid-market exchange rates — a major advantage given that Morocco receives billions in annual remittances from abroad.
What you need
- Valid Moroccan passport (not expired)
- A Spanish address (for card delivery and verification)
- Email address
Step by step
Create your Wise account
Go to wise.com or download the Wise app. Click Register and select personal account. Use the referral link below.
Enter your details
Enter your full name as on your passport, date of birth and a Spanish address. Select Morocco as your nationality.
Verify your identity
Upload a photo of your Moroccan passport and take a selfie. Wise may also ask for proof of address — a utility bill, bank statement or any document showing your name and Spanish address.
Account active
Once verified, your account is ready. Your IBAN will be BE97 (Belgian). You can immediately send money to Morocco at mid-market rates.
⚠️ Wise IBAN is Belgian, not Spanish
Your Wise IBAN starts with BE97, not ES. Many Spanish employers only accept ES IBANs for salary payments. I personally tried to use a BE97 for my salary — my employer rejected it: "el IBAN debe ser español." Use Revolut's ES87 for salary and Wise for sending money to Morocco.

Sending money from Spain to Morocco
💸 Moroccans in Spain send billions home every year
Morocco receives over $11 billion in annual remittances — one of the highest in the world. If you regularly send money to family in Morocco, the tool you use makes a big difference in how much arrives. Wise consistently offers some of the best EUR to MAD rates available, with transparent fees shown before you confirm the transfer.
For sending money to Morocco, Wise is the better tool. It supports MAD transfers directly to Moroccan bank accounts and applies the mid-market rate — the same rate you see on Google. Traditional banks and money transfer services add large hidden margins on top.
Revolut also supports MAD conversions, but fees vary by plan. For regular remittances to Morocco, Wise is generally cheaper and more predictable.
N26 — requires NIE since 2026
N26 offers a real Spanish IBAN (ES20) and a solid app, but since 2026 it requires a NIE to open an account in Spain. Once you have your NIE, N26 is worth considering — it doesn't require padrón or proof of rental contract, just NIE plus passport.

Receiving your salary in Spain as a Moroccan
For receiving your salary in Spain, Revolut is the clear choice. Its Spanish IBAN (ES87) works with all Spanish payroll systems. Use Wise only for sending money to Morocco — not for receiving your nómina.
Important: Social Security warning
⚠️ Revolut and Wise are NOT on Spain's Social Security bank list (TGSS)
Revolut, Wise and N26 are not on Spain's official Social Security collaborating bank list (Tesorería General de la Seguridad Social). This means:
- You cannot receive unemployment benefits (paro) into Revolut or Wise
- Autónomos cannot make Social Security contributions directly from these accounts
For Social Security purposes you need a traditional Spanish bank or EVO Banco — the only neobank on the TGSS list. Use Revolut for salary and day-to-day, and open a traditional account or EVO Banco when you need Social Security access.
Frequently asked questions

Do I need padrón or rental contract?
No. Neither Revolut nor Wise require padrón (municipal registration) or proof of rental contract. A temporary address in Spain is enough.
Can I send money from Spain to Morocco with Revolut?
Revolut supports MAD as a currency, but Wise generally offers better rates and lower fees for EUR → MAD transfers. For regular remittances to Morocco, Wise is the recommended tool.
Can I open Revolut before arriving in Spain?
Revolut requires a Spanish residential address during sign-up. You can use a friend's address, hotel or future accommodation address. Complete the process once you are in Spain and have a phone number.
Is my money safe in Revolut and Wise?
Yes. Revolut operates as Revolut Bank UAB, Sucursal en España, a fully licensed EU bank with deposit protection up to €100,000. Wise is regulated by the FCA and Banco de España. Both are legal and used by millions across Europe.
Will I be asked for NIE later once my account is open?
For standard everyday use — salary, bills, transfers — you won't be asked for NIE. Revolut may request additional information for large transactions or compliance reviews. If you obtain your NIE later, you can update your profile.
