🇻🇪 Good news: I am Venezuelan and I personally opened both Revolut and Wise in Spain using only my Venezuelan passport and a Spanish address. No NIE, no padrón, no rental contract. It worked without problems.

I am Venezuelan. I opened Revolut and Wise in Spain with my Venezuelan passport. I receive my salary through Revolut's Spanish IBAN (ES87). I tested over 15 banks — BBVA, Santander and CaixaBank all rejected me without NIE. This guide is based on my real personal experience.

The reality for Venezuelans arriving in Spain
I arrived in Spain from Venezuela. One of the first things I needed was a bank account — to pay rent, receive a salary, cover basic expenses. Like most Venezuelans, I went to the big banks first.
My experience: I was rejected by BBVA, Santander and CaixaBank — both in branch and online. The answer was always the same: "Sin NIE no podemos abrir la cuenta." Getting a NIE appointment in Madrid or Barcelona takes weeks, sometimes months. But I needed an account immediately. That's when I discovered Revolut and Wise.
I opened Revolut with my Venezuelan passport and a Spanish address. No NIE, no padrón, no problems. The account was approved in minutes. I then did the same with Wise. Both worked. Today I receive my salary through Revolut's Spanish IBAN — my employer doesn't even know it's a neobank.
This guide documents exactly what I did so you can replicate it from day one of your arrival in Spain.

Can you open an account before leaving Venezuela?
⚠️ Honest answer: No — not Revolut or Wise
Revolut is not available in Venezuela and requires a Spanish residential address to register. You cannot open a Revolut account from Venezuelan territory.
Wise also blocks access from Venezuela. Although you can open Wise with a Venezuelan passport, you need a Spanish address and to be physically in Spain when you register.
The good news: both Revolut and Wise can be opened the same day you arrive in Spain — within minutes of having a Spanish address (your hotel, a friend's place, your new accommodation). You don't need to wait for anything. That's why the title of this guide is "Day One."
What you need before landing: just your Venezuelan passport in date and a plan for where you'll stay the first night. Everything else can be sorted on arrival.
Revolut with a Venezuelan passport — step by step
✓ Personally verified. I opened Revolut in Spain with my Venezuelan passport and a Spanish address. No problems at any stage. Account approved in minutes. Spanish IBAN (ES87) received immediately.
What you need
- Valid Venezuelan passport (not expired — see note below)
- A Spanish address — hotel, friend's place, or your new accommodation
- A phone number (Spanish or any European number)
- Email address
⚠️ Note on Venezuelan passport validity
Some Venezuelan passports have been administratively extended by SAIME (Venezuela's passport authority) beyond their printed expiry date. Revolut's system reads the printed date on the passport. If your passport appears expired, contact Revolut support before applying and explain the SAIME extension. In practice, many Venezuelans have successfully verified with extended passports — but it depends on the specific verification agent.
Step by step
Download Revolut — do this as soon as you land
Download the Revolut app from the App Store or Google Play. You can do this at the airport while you wait for your luggage. Use the referral link below.
Enter your phone number, create a PIN and add your email. Select Spain as your country of residence.
Enter your personal details
Enter your full name exactly as it appears on your Venezuelan passport, your date of birth, nationality (Venezuela) and your Spanish address. A hotel address, friend's address or new accommodation all work — I used a friend's address when I first arrived.
Verify with your Venezuelan passport
Select Passport as your document. Take a clear, well-lit photo of your Venezuelan passport data page. Then take a selfie. No NIE asked at any point. I had no problems with this step.
Your Spanish IBAN is ready
Account approved in minutes. Go to Accounts → EUR → Account details. Your IBAN starts with ES87. Share this with your employer for salary payments — it works exactly like any Spanish bank account.

Wise with a Venezuelan passport — step by step
✓ Personally verified. I opened Wise in Spain with my Venezuelan passport and a Spanish address. No problems. Note: Wise blocks access from Venezuelan territory — you must open it from Spain, not from Venezuela.
Wise is useful for sending money internationally. Its exchange rates are transparent and competitive. However, Wise gives you a Belgian IBAN (BE97) — not a Spanish one — which means most Spanish employers will reject it for salary payments. Use Revolut for salary, Wise for international transfers.
What you need
- Valid Venezuelan passport
- A Spanish address (for card delivery and account verification)
- Email address
⚠️ Open Wise from Spain, not from Venezuela
Wise detects your location. If you try to register from Venezuela, you'll see a block message. Wait until you are in Spain with a Spanish address before opening Wise. Once opened, you can use it normally.
Create your account from Spain
Go to wise.com or download the app once you are in Spain. Click Register and select personal account.
Enter your details
Enter your full name, date of birth and your Spanish address. Select Venezuela as your nationality.
Verify your identity
Upload a photo of your Venezuelan passport and take a selfie. Wise may also ask for proof of address — a utility bill, bank statement or any document showing your name and Spanish address. I used a friend's address and it was accepted.
Account active
Once verified, your account is ready. Your IBAN will be BE97 (Belgian). You can send money internationally immediately.
⚠️ Wise IBAN is Belgian — not accepted for Spanish salary
I personally tried to use my Wise BE97 IBAN for my salary. My employer's payroll system rejected it: "el IBAN debe ser español." I also tried with a utility bill (Endesa) — rejected for the same reason. For anything requiring a Spanish IBAN, use Revolut's ES87.
Open Wise
Venezuelan passport accepted in Spain. Best rates for international transfers.

N26 — requires NIE since 2026
N26 is a solid bank with a real Spanish IBAN (ES20), but since 2026 it requires a NIE to open an account in Spain. N26 was the bank that specifically asked me for a national document I couldn't provide without NIE.
Once you have your NIE, N26 is worth opening — it doesn't require padrón or rental contract, just NIE plus passport. But until then, Revolut is your account.

Receiving your salary in Spain with a Venezuelan passport
I personally receive my salary through Revolut's Spanish IBAN (ES87). My employer processes it the same as any other Spanish bank account. This is the most important practical advantage of Revolut over Wise for a Venezuelan arriving in Spain.
Important: Social Security warning
⚠️ Revolut and Wise are NOT on Spain's Social Security bank list (TGSS)
Revolut, Wise and N26 are not on Spain's official Social Security collaborating bank list (Tesorería General de la Seguridad Social). This means:
- You cannot receive unemployment benefits (paro) into Revolut or Wise
- Autónomos cannot make Social Security contributions directly from these accounts
For Social Security purposes you need a traditional Spanish bank or EVO Banco — the only neobank on the TGSS list. Use Revolut for your salary and daily life, and open a traditional account or EVO Banco when you need Social Security access.
Frequently asked questions
Can I open Revolut the same day I arrive in Spain?
Yes. As soon as you have a Spanish address — your hotel, a friend's place, your new accommodation — you can open Revolut. The whole process takes under 15 minutes. I recommend doing it the same day you land.
What address should I use if I just arrived and don't have a flat yet?
A hotel address, a friend's address or your future accommodation all work. I used a friend's address when I first arrived. Revolut does not require proof of address documents — just the address itself during sign-up.
My Venezuelan passport is expired but has a SAIME extension — will it work?
This is the most delicate situation. Revolut reads the printed expiry date on the passport. Some Venezuelans have successfully verified with SAIME-extended passports — it depends on the verification agent. If you have issues, contact Revolut support directly through the app and explain the situation. Having a valid extended passport from SAIME is legal in Spain.
Can I use Revolut to send money to Venezuela?
Revolut does not support transfers to Venezuelan bank accounts (VEF/VES) due to sanctions. For sending money to Venezuela you'll need a specialist remittance service like Remitly, WorldRemit or similar. Wise also does not support Venezuela as a destination country.
Will I be asked for NIE later once my account is open?
For standard everyday use — salary, bills, transfers — Revolut doesn't ask for NIE. If you make large transactions, Revolut's compliance system may request additional documentation. Once you obtain your NIE, update your profile — it also unlocks access to N26 and other services.
Is the Venezuelan community in Spain large enough that banks know my situation?
Yes — over 690,000 Venezuelans live in Spain, making it the third largest foreign community. Neobanks like Revolut are well aware of this demographic and have streamlined their processes for non-EU passport holders. Traditional banks, however, still apply rigid NIE requirements regardless.
