TL;DR — Quick Answer

Yes, you can open a Wise account in Spain without a NIE. You only need your passport. Wise gives you a Belgian IBAN (BE97) that works for international transfers and receiving EU payments.

Requirements: Valid passport (any country) + address + phone number

Approval time: Usually 5-10 minutes

Best for: International transfers, receiving payments from abroad, holding multiple currencies at the best exchange rates.

Important: Wise gives a Belgian IBAN (BE), not Spanish (ES). Many Spanish employers won't accept it for salary. For salary deposits, use Revolut — it gives a real Spanish IBAN. Many migrants use both.

Why Wise Works for Migrants in Spain

When you arrive in Spain without NIE, traditional banks reject you immediately. Wise is one of the few options that works from day one — no NIE, no proof of address, no minimum deposit.

Wise is especially powerful if you receive money from abroad, work remotely for a foreign company, or need to send money internationally at low cost. It holds money in 40+ currencies and converts at the real mid-market exchange rate — the same rate you see on Google.

  • No NIE required — passport from any country is enough
  • Belgian IBAN (BE97) — works for international transfers and EU payments
  • Best international transfer rates — much cheaper than any bank
  • Multi-currency account — hold EUR, USD, GBP, and 40+ currencies
  • Opens in 5-10 minutes — fully online, no branch visits
  • Free to open — no monthly fees for the basic account
  • Temporary address accepted — Airbnb, hostel, friend's place all work

⚠️ Important: Belgian IBAN, not Spanish

Wise gives you a Belgian IBAN starting with BE97. This works perfectly for most international payments, but many Spanish employers won't accept it for salary deposits — they expect a Spanish IBAN (ES).

If you need to receive your Spanish salary, use Revolut — it gives a real Spanish IBAN (ES87) with no NIE required. Many migrants use both: Wise for transfers, Revolut for salary and Spanish bills.

Step-by-Step: How to Open Wise in Spain Without NIE

Step 1

Download the Wise app

Download Wise from the App Store or Google Play. Or sign up directly at wise.com. Use my referral link to get your first transfer free.

Step 2

Create your account

Enter your email address and create a password. Select "Personal account" (not business). Enter your full name exactly as it appears on your passport.

Step 3

Enter your address

Enter your current address in Spain. This can be temporary — Airbnb, hostel, or a friend's address all work. Wise does not ask for proof of address at this stage.

Step 4

Verify your identity

Take a clear photo of your passport's front page. Then take a selfie for liveness verification. Passport from any country is accepted — no NIE, no TIE, no Spanish documents needed.

Step 5

Wait for approval

Wise usually approves in 5-10 minutes. In rare cases it can take up to 24 hours. You'll receive an email when approved.

Step 6

Activate your EUR account and get your IBAN

Once approved, go to Add currency → EUR. Wise assigns you a Belgian IBAN (BE97...) immediately. This is your account number for receiving EUR payments.

Step 7

Order your debit card (optional)

You can order a Wise Mastercard debit card for a one-time fee of €9. Works everywhere Mastercard is accepted. Arrives in 5-10 business days.

Your Belgian IBAN Explained

When you activate your EUR account, Wise gives you a Belgian IBAN starting with BE97. This is a real European bank account number — not a virtual wallet.

Your Belgian IBAN works for:

  • ✓ Receiving payments from other EU countries
  • ✓ Receiving payments from international or remote employers
  • ✓ Receiving freelance payments (PayPal, Stripe, etc.)
  • ✓ SEPA transfers within Europe
  • ✓ Paying invoices and subscriptions
  • ✓ Sending money internationally at the best rates

⚠️ What the Belgian IBAN does NOT work for reliably

Some Spanish companies and systems specifically require a Spanish IBAN (ES):

  • Receiving salary (nómina) from Spanish employers
  • Direct debit for some Spanish utilities (Endesa, Iberdrola)
  • Some rental payment systems
  • Social Security payments

For these needs, Revolut gives you a real Spanish IBAN (ES87) with no NIE required. Many migrants use both: Wise for transfers, Revolut for Spanish banking needs.

⚠️ Important: Social Security Payments

Wise does NOT work for Social Security payments

Wise is not on Spain's official list of Social Security collaborator banks (entidades colaboradoras de la TGSS). This means:

  • ❌ You cannot receive unemployment benefits (paro) into Wise
  • ❌ You cannot make Social Security contributions as autónomo directly from Wise
  • ❌ Some Social Security reimbursements may not process correctly

For Social Security-related payments you need a traditional Spanish bank or EVO Banco — the only neobank currently on the official TGSS collaborator list.

If you're employed (not autónomo), your employer handles Social Security — so this limitation typically won't affect your day-to-day use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I open Wise with a Venezuelan (or any Latin American) passport?

Yes. I opened mine with a Venezuelan passport. Wise accepts passports from virtually all countries. What matters is that the passport is valid and the photo is clear during verification.

Does Wise report to Spanish tax authorities?

Wise complies with EU financial regulations and may share information with tax authorities if required by law. This is standard for all regulated financial institutions in Europe — same as any bank.

Can I receive my salary into Wise in Spain?

It depends on your employer. Wise gives a Belgian IBAN (BE97). Some Spanish employers accept it, others specifically require a Spanish IBAN (ES). Check with your HR before relying on Wise for salary. If they need a Spanish IBAN, use Revolut instead.

Can I receive Social Security payments into Wise?

No. Wise is not on Spain's official list of Social Security collaborator banks (TGSS). For Social Security payments — unemployment benefits or autónomo contributions — you need a traditional Spanish bank or EVO Banco, the only neobank on the official TGSS list.

Is Wise a real bank or just an app?

Wise is not a traditional bank — it's an Electronic Money Institution (EMI) regulated by the Belgian National Bank. Your money is safeguarded in segregated accounts. For most everyday purposes it functions like a bank account, but it doesn't have deposit insurance like FSCS or European DGS.

What if Wise rejects my application?

Wise has a high approval rate. If rejected, make sure your passport photo is sharp, fully visible and unobstructed. If still rejected, N26 (requires NIE) or Revolut (passport only) are your best alternatives.

Should I update my Wise account when I get my NIE?

Yes. Update your profile with your NIE once you have it. This unlocks higher transfer limits and keeps your account compliant with Spanish financial regulations long-term.
