Bank Account in Spain With a Romanian Passport — No NIE Needed (2026)
🇷🇴 Good news: Romanian citizens have an advantage. As EU citizens, your passport and your national ID card (Carte de Identitate) are both accepted by Revolut. No NIE required. Account open in under 10 minutes.

Venezuelan migrant in Spain for 8 years. I personally use Revolut and Wise as my primary accounts in Spain. I have tested over 15 banks — including BBVA, Santander and CaixaBank, which all rejected me without NIE.

Your EU citizen advantage
🇪🇺 Romanian citizens have extra options
As an EU citizen, you have two important advantages over non-EU migrants in Spain:
- Two valid documents: Revolut accepts your Romanian passport or your Carte de Identitate (national ID card). You don't need your passport if you only have your ID card.
- Right of residence: As an EU citizen you have the automatic right to live and work in Spain. You don't need to wait for any visa or permit to open a bank account.
You still don't need NIE for Revolut or Wise — but your Romanian ID card alone is sufficient, which is a big practical advantage if your passport has expired or you left it at home.
Quick summary — which bank for you?
| Bank | NIE required? | Accepts Romanian ID? | IBAN type | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Revolut | ✓ No NIE | ✓ Yes | Spanish (ES87) | Salary, bills, everyday use |
| Wise | ✓ No NIE | ✓ Yes | Belgian (BE97) | Sending money to Romania |
| N26 | ✗ Requires NIE | ✗ NIE needed | Spanish (ES20) | After you get your NIE |
| BBVA / Santander | ✗ Requires NIE | ✗ NIE needed | Spanish | Not recommended without NIE |
My recommendation for most Romanians arriving in Spain: open Revolut first (Spanish IBAN, free, under 10 minutes with your Romanian ID card). Add Wise later if you send money back to Romania regularly.
Why traditional Spanish banks still make it hard
You might expect that as an EU citizen, Spanish banks would welcome you with open arms. In theory, they should. In practice, most major banks — BBVA, Santander, CaixaBank — still ask for a NIE even from EU citizens before opening a standard resident account.
They do offer "non-resident accounts" (cuentas no residentes) but these come with higher fees, limited functionality and often require a visit to a branch with multiple documents including a certificado de no residente from a Spanish consulate.
Neobanks don't have this problem. They are 100% digital, process your Romanian ID or passport in minutes, and give you a functional account with a real Spanish IBAN immediately. No appointments, no bureaucracy.
Revolut with a Romanian passport or ID card — step by step
✓ Romanian documents accepted. Revolut is available in Romania and accepts both Romanian passports and Carte de Identitate (national ID cards). No NIE required.
Revolut gives you a real Spanish IBAN (ES87) — the same format as any traditional Spanish bank. Your employer's payroll system will accept it, and you can domiciliate utility bills, rent and any other Spanish direct debits.
What you need
- Valid Romanian passport or Carte de Identitate (national ID card)
- A Spanish phone number or any European number
- A Spanish address (temporary is fine — hotel, friend's place)
- Email address
Step by step
Download the Revolut app
Download Revolut from the App Store or Google Play. Use the referral link below to get a bonus on sign-up.
Enter your phone number, create a PIN and add your email. Select Spain as your country of residence.
Enter your personal details
Enter your full name exactly as on your Romanian document, date of birth, nationality (Romania) and a Spanish address. A hotel, friend's address or future accommodation all work.
Choose your document
You can select Passport or National ID Card. If you have your Carte de Identitate, select National ID. Take a clear photo of both sides and a selfie. No NIE asked at any point.
Account approved
Most accounts are approved within minutes. Go to Accounts → EUR → Account details to see your Spanish IBAN starting with ES87.

Wise with a Romanian passport — step by step
✓ Romanian documents accepted. Wise accepts Romanian passports and ID cards with no restrictions. No NIE required.
Wise is the best option for Romanians who regularly send money back home. Its exchange rates for EUR → RON are among the best available, with transparent low fees. However, Wise gives you a Belgian IBAN (BE97), not a Spanish one — which limits its usefulness for receiving salary in Spain.
What you need
- Valid Romanian passport or Carte de Identitate
- A Spanish address (for card delivery and verification)
- Email address
Step by step
Create your Wise account
Go to wise.com or download the app. Click Register and select personal account. Use the referral link below.
Enter your details
Enter your full name, date of birth and a Spanish address. Select Romania as your nationality.
Verify your identity
Upload your Romanian passport or Carte de Identitate and take a selfie. Wise may also ask for proof of address — a utility bill, bank statement or any document with your name and Spanish address.
Account active
Once verified, your Wise account is ready. You'll have a BE97 Belgian IBAN for receiving transfers. You can send money to Romanian bank accounts in RON immediately at mid-market rates.
⚠️ Wise IBAN is Belgian, not Spanish
Your Wise IBAN starts with BE97. Many Spanish employers and payroll systems only accept ES IBANs for salary payments. I personally tried to use a BE97 IBAN for my salary — my employer rejected it: "el IBAN debe ser español." Use Revolut's ES87 for salary and Wise for sending money to Romania.
Open Wise — Best Rates to Send Money to Romania
No NIE needed. Romanian passport or ID card accepted. Best EUR → RON rates.

N26 — requires NIE since 2026
N26 is a strong everyday bank with a clean app and a real Spanish IBAN (ES20). However, since 2026 N26 requires a NIE to open an account in Spain — even for EU citizens like Romanians.
The good news: N26 does not require padrón (municipal registration) or proof of rental contract — just your NIE and passport or ID. So once you obtain your NIE, N26 is worth considering alongside Revolut.

Receiving your salary in Spain as a Romanian
For salary, Revolut is the clear choice. Its Spanish IBAN (ES87) is indistinguishable from a traditional bank IBAN in Spain. Your employer's payroll system will process it without issues.
Wise's Belgian IBAN (BE97) is problematic for Spanish payroll. Many Spanish HR departments have payroll software configured to only accept IBANs starting with ES. Use Wise exclusively for sending money to Romania — not for receiving your Spanish salary.
Important: Social Security warning
⚠️ Revolut and Wise are NOT on Spain's Social Security bank list (TGSS)
Revolut, Wise and N26 are not on Spain's official Social Security collaborating bank list (Tesorería General de la Seguridad Social). This means:
- You cannot receive unemployment benefits (paro) into Revolut or Wise
- Autónomos cannot pay Social Security contributions directly from these accounts
For Social Security purposes you need a traditional Spanish bank or EVO Banco — the only neobank on the TGSS list. Use Revolut for salary and day-to-day spending, and open a traditional account or EVO Banco when you need Social Security access.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use my Carte de Identitate instead of my Romanian passport?
Yes. As an EU citizen, Revolut accepts your Romanian national ID card (Carte de Identitate) as a valid identity document. You don't need your passport. Wise also accepts it.
Do I need NIE to open a bank account in Spain as a Romanian?
No — for Revolut and Wise. Your Romanian passport or ID card is enough. N26 requires NIE since 2026. Traditional banks technically accept EU citizens without NIE for non-resident accounts, but in practice most still ask for it.
Can I open Revolut before arriving in Spain?
Revolut requires a Spanish residential address during sign-up. You can use a friend's address or future accommodation. Complete the process once you are in Spain and have a Spanish or European phone number.
Is Revolut available in Romania?
Yes — Romania is on Revolut's supported countries list as an EEA member. Romanian citizens can open Revolut accounts in Romania or in Spain. If you already have a Revolut account from Romania, you may be able to update your address to Spain.
Which is better for sending money from Spain to Romania — Revolut or Wise?
Wise generally offers better exchange rates and lower fees for EUR → RON transfers. Revolut also supports RON but fees vary by plan. If you send money to Romania regularly, Wise is the better tool — use Revolut for your Spanish salary and day-to-day, Wise for transfers home.
Will I be asked for my NIE later once my account is open?
Revolut may eventually ask for additional information for compliance purposes, especially for large transactions. However, for standard everyday use — salary, bills, transfers — you won't be asked for NIE. If you obtain your NIE later, you can always update your profile.
