Your PC can’t run Windows 11: what to buy without overpaying
Before changing computer, check whether you need to. And if you do: which type suits you, what it needs so it lasts, and how not to buy one that does not work either.

What has happened
Since Windows 10 lost support, many people have heard they need a new computer. Sometimes it's true, but there are two traps: buying one you didn't need and buying one that doesn't work either. On 9 October 2026, a laptop search on Amazon showed one advertised “with Windows 11” with a seventh-generation Intel processor (Core i5-7Y54), which is not on Microsoft's list.
Why it matters to you
Open (or install) PC Health Check, Microsoft's free app, and press “Check now”. If your machine can move to Windows 11, the upgrade is free and you don't need to buy anything. If it can't, you have until October 2027, as we explain in Windows 10 in 2026: the three real ways out. And if you do almost everything in the browser, ChromeOS Flex is a free Google system that installs on many older computers (first check yours is on its list of certified models).
Replacing it does make sense if the machine was already slow, the battery doesn't last or you want something that lasts another six years without thinking about it. Buying then means deciding calmly, rather than in a rush in October 2027.
What you can do
1. Choose the type of computer
Laptop. The usual choice if you move it around the house or take it out: screen, keyboard, battery and camera are all built in.
Mini PC. A book-sized box that connects to your usual screen, keyboard and mouse. If the old one was a desktop and the rest still works, it's how you avoid paying twice for the same thing.
Chromebook Plus. A laptop with Google's system instead of Windows. It works if you do everything in the browser; not if you depend on a Windows program. Google gives 10 years of updates, but counted from when it launched each model's platform, not from when you buy it: each model's date is on its update page.
2. Check it has what it needs to last
| Part | Microsoft's minimum | Recommended so it lasts |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | One on its list | Intel Core 8th generation or later, Core Ultra, or AMD Ryzen 4000 to 9000, 100, 200 series or Ryzen AI |
| Memory | 4 GB | 16 GB (8 gets tight with many tabs) |
| Storage | 64 GB | 512 GB SSD |
| System | Windows 11 | Windows 11 Home pre-installed |
The processor is what decides: being fast isn't enough, it has to be on the list. And before switching it on, have an internet connection and a Microsoft account ready: Windows 11 Home asks for both to finish setup.
3. If it's refurbished, look at the processor number
- Intel Core: look at the digits after the dash. If they start with 6 or 7 (i5-7300U, i5-6300U), it won't do. If they start with 8 to 14 (i5-8365U, i5-10210U, i5-1235U), it will. Core Ultra and Core 3, 5 or 7 without the “i” are fine too.
- AMD Ryzen: four digits starting 4 to 9, yes; three digits (Ryzen 5 220, Ryzen 7 260), yes; starting with 2, no; with 3, there are exceptions: best avoided. Ryzen AI, yes.
- Celeron and “Intel N”: usually on the list, but meant for basic tasks.
It's a rule of thumb taken from Microsoft's lists, not a Microsoft rule: if in doubt, look the model up on the official list. Mind the warranty too: in Spain, bought new from a business it's three years; second-hand from a business it can be agreed lower, never under one; from a private seller, this warranty doesn't apply.
4. Don't pay for what you won't use
- The AI label: if you use ChatGPT or Gemini in the browser, you don't need a Copilot+ PC. If you want AI running on the computer itself, that's a different purchase: which laptop to buy for running AI at home.
- “Gaming” laptops: they carry a graphics card you won't use for email and documents, weigh more and use more battery.
- Windows 11 Pro: Home is enough for the house.
- An extra three-year warranty: in Spain, bought new from a business, the legal warranty is already three years from delivery and the seller is responsible. What it doesn't cover is dropping it: that's insurance.
5. Check any listing in a minute with AI
Copy the full listing of the computer, paste it into ChatGPT, Gemini or whichever AI you use, and add this:
Here is the listing of a computer I want to buy. Tell me in plain language: 1) Which processor it has and whether it is on the Windows 11 list (Intel Core 8th generation or later, Intel Core Ultra, or AMD Ryzen 4000 to 9000, 100, 200 series or Ryzen AI). 2) How much RAM it has and whether it can be upgraded. 3) Which drive it has, whether it is an SSD and how big. 4) Whether it comes with Windows 11 Home or Pro already installed. 5) Which detail is missing from the listing and I should ask the seller. Do not recommend another model: review only this one.
AI can get a processor name wrong: if it says yes, check it on Microsoft's list before paying.
6. What to do with the old computer
- Copy your files and check they open before deleting anything.
- Wipe it properly: in Windows 10, Settings → Update & Security → Recovery → “Reset this PC” → “Remove everything”, and turn on “Clean data” if you'll give it away, sell or recycle it.
- Recycle it for free: in Spain, the shop selling you the new one must take back the old one of the same type, online too, with at least 30 days to hand it in. Otherwise, your council's recycling point.
The recommendation
Run Microsoft's check first. If your computer can handle Windows 11, don't buy anything. If it can't, sign up for the free patches and buy without rushing, with this list in hand; if the old one was a desktop and the screen is fine, a mini PC is usually the cheapest option. And before paying, check the processor on Microsoft's list.

As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases. No specific model is linked because none has been tested here: the search applies the criteria and the decision is yours. Watch out: the search can slip in a computer with an old processor (on 9 October one appeared with a Core i5-7Y54, which cannot run Windows 11). Always check the processor with the rule in this article.
